Assisi – May 23, 2012 – By Natalia

Cloudy and drizzly weather appeared for our walking trip through Assisi.   It was a great day to find inspiration indoors, and that is what we found in Assisi.  We took the Rick Steve’s self guided walking tour of Assisi.  It gave us a path for visiting the churches of St. Ruffius, St. Clare, St. Stephano, and finally St. Francis’s Basilica.

St. Francis’s Basilica sits atop  a hill overlooking the Italian countryside.

The decor inside the church is stunning! There are frescoes depicting the life of St. Francis covering entire walls, mahogany choir seats, and gold everywhere! Unfortunately the Brothers did not allow us to take pictures.  😦  After seeing the basilica we walked downstairs to see the chapels that are carved out of caves.  We proceeded on the underground walk and visited the tomb of St. Francis.

Seeing a place we have heard of in church, and contemplating the impact of St. Francis’ work on the lives of so many people, is a truly incredible experience.  This small, quiet town has touched people all over the world.
