Florence – May 20, 2012 – May 21, 2012 – By Natalia

The day looks bright and sunny! Perfect for strolling around Florence, waiting in line to see the Duomo, and hunting down the famous Florentine Gelato. Well our plans went slightly off track when we stepped out of the parking lot to see gray rain clouds moving overhead. Maybe it was a mistake to wear those sandals…..Anyway, we will make the day work!

We had to park pretty far from the sites because of Florence’s no driving zones, and Florence has very few taxis so we hiked to the Academia Museum. Once we reached the museum we realized we were not the only people who were planning to see “the David”.  To escape the long line we decide to find the best gelato bar in Florence and come back to the museum in the afternoon.

On our way we walked by the Florence cathedral and admired the detailed statues of the apostles and Mary staring down from atop.

We also walked by many street artists and mimes.

When we finally reached the gelato bar, “Gelateria Carozze”, it was drizzling.  But no one cared about the rain while holding onto gelato cones! The Tirimasu flavor was delicious and almost as good as the gelato from Paciugo in Dallas 🙂

After polishing off our extra-large cones the rain lightened and we decided to walk back to the Academia.

We still had to stand  in line for a while, but once we were inside and staring at Michelangelo’s David, we knew that waiting in the rain was completely worth it! We The detail of David’s face is stunning, it is almost as if you can tell what he is thinking.

When we left the museum it was still raining, and catching a cab in Florence is not exactly the most simple task. We were  left with no other choice but to walk back to our car in the rain. Well, on the bright side all that walking gave us a chance to see more of Florence, and walk off that gelato. By the time we had driven back to the Autogrill we were so hungry that we headed straight for the cafe, ordered lots and lots of food, and totally went for it!

Tomorrow we will rest and plan our trip to the city where all the roads lead…Rome.
