Exploring Cluny and Lyon – May 5, 2012 – By Lancelot

This morning we followed our French routine with croissants for breakfast.  It is right to eat croissants while we are in France.  After breakfast we packed up… in under 7 minutes… and headed to Lyon.  We took the scenic route through Cluny.  In Cluny there is a Benedictine Monastery founded in 910.  During the bombs of the French Revolution the monastery was badly damaged.   There is constant work on the monastery to restore and maintain this piece of faith and history.  We had lunch in the square in Cluny . I don’t remember the name of the restaurant…but we had a savory stew  that was delicious.

After lunch we drove to Lyon, the second largest city in France. Lyon has an amazing church called Notre Dame.  “Notre Dame” means “Our Lady.”  The people of Lyon prayed rosaries asking Mary to pray with them to God for protection during a Russian invasion.  God granted the protection and Mary became Lyon’s patron.

After exploring Lyon we went to a camp site called “Indigo.”  Do not go there.  It is HAUNTED.  No kidding.  The park contains abandoned motor homes and tents.  The park is full of weeds and the residents look like zombies.  The board outside Indigo claimed the park had 4 stars…perhaps this is true in outer space!  Insanely we set up a tent  and then went to a  great restaurant called  Les Lyonnais.

Now that place had 4 start food.  Rick Steve recommends Les Lyonnais in his book  “France 2012”.

Following dinner we took some photos and returned to Indigo.  We used our camp code to enter the locked gates, but after we entered our gut told us not to stay the night in this park.   We got our tent, but could not get out.  The gate locks from the outside, and the code box is also outside …”PRISON?”  I climbed over the fence, punched in the code and let my dad and brothers out of the park.  Jail break! The Renault became  our camp site.

  1. I heard a couple of guys talking about this in the New York subway so I looked it up online and found your page. Thanks. I thought I was right and you confirmed my thoughts. Thanks for the work you’ve put into this. I’d love to save this and share with my friends.
